“Oh nothing, just girl talk.” I took another look at Emma. She saw me and winked, then turned and kissed Alex.

“Alrighty. Well. This is my next class,” he said and pointed to the door next to me. “Do you want me to walk you to yours? Orrrr should I see you at lunch?” He stumbled over his words.

I couldn’t even look him in the eyes. I was embarrassed. “I’ll just see you at lunch.”

“Okay. Cool.” He handed me my backpack and then left me standing there as he walked into his classroom.

I sighed and looked around. Was this what everyone around me was doing? Were they all having sex? Most of my friends were with someone. I wondered if I was the only one who had never had sex. Was I the lone virgin? I looked down to the ground and realized I was alone in a crowd of shoes. Someone tapped me on the shoulder. Startled, I jumped.

“Hey, girl. What’s up? We gotta go.” It was Lily. “If you keep standing here like this, you’ll get run over.”

“Oh. Right. Yeah.” I shook my head to bring myself back to reality and started walking with her to history.

“Lily?”

“Yeah?” she answered, looking at me oddly. “Girl, you are acting weird.”

“Can I ask you a serious question?”

“Of course.”

“Have you had sex?”

She laughed. “Look, I don’t even have a boyfriend. What do you take me for?”

“Okay.” I sighed. “What if you had a boyfriend? Would you?”

“Hmmm. Maybe?” she said with a shrug. “But then again, I don’t even know what I like. No.” She looked at me and asked, “What’s gotten into you?”

“I was talking to Emma.”

“Oh. Yeah. That makes sense,” she said, nodding. “That girl is boy crazy. She would do anything to keep Alex.”

“Do you have to sleep with a boy to keep him?”

“I have no idea. None. At all. I’m sorry I can’t help you,” she said. We reached the door to the history classroom. “But one thing I can tell you is that you shouldn’t do anything you aren’t ready for. And if he breaks up with you because of that? Then he sucks.”
